How to Bring a Guest Into Your Instagram Live

You are about to find out the why and how of bringing a guest into your Instagram Live videos.  We’ll start with why you should bring guests into your Instagram Live videos, and then we’ll discuss how to do it.  The how is quite easy, actually.

As a bonus, I’ve also got 5 tips that will help you successfully invite people to appear as a guest in your Instagram Live videos.

At the end of this blog post is a video that covers all of this, as well, along with additional thoughts not covered in the blog post so be sure to check it out.

Why Bring a Guest Into Your Instagram Live Video?

Being that I host a daily podcast called ‘Grammer School, that focuses on educating people about how to use Instagram for their brand or business, I get a lot of questions.

One of the questions I get the most is “How do I grow my Instagram account?”

There are many ways one can focus on the growth of your Instagram account, but the most popular way to focus on the growth is to maintain concern about the number of followers you have.  This is what most people do.

However, I think the best thing to consider is how many quality followers one has, rather than how many followers they have overall.

If you can take on the mindset of quality over quantity, and you’d like to grow your account with quality followers, having a guest on to your Instagram Live is the best way to grow with quality followers.  I’ll explain.

When you go live, by yourself, your followers are notified that you have gone live.  Some will join in, some won’t.

When you go live and invite a guest into your broadcast, their followers will also be notified that they are live (but on your channel).  Some will join in, some won’t.

For those that come in from your follower list, they will be introduced to your guest.

For those that come in from your guest’s follower list, they will be introduced to you.

If you think about it, this is the most powerful way someone can become acquainted with you anywhere on Instagram.

Instagram has photos.  Instagram has videos.

But it is in the live videos where people can see you in real time, see how you speak, see your facial expressions, see how you sound, see how you respond to other people, including your guest and from comments in the audience.

This is where you can really shine.  And when you shine, people will follow.

This works for your guest, too.  There is every reason why it’s just as good to be a guest on someone else’s channel as there is that it’s important to invite people in as a guest on your channel.

So with Instagram Live, not only do you have an opportunity to make a solid impression on legions of people (if you go live regularly, and with a guest), but you have the ability to impact and improve the lives of countless people by entertaining and educating them, as well as widening your scope of authority, making new connections and networking like a badass, and growing your own audience.

Now that I’ve made a compelling case to going live on Instagram, regularly, and with a guest (or as a guest), let’s talk about how to bring a guest into your Instagram Live.

How to Bring a Guest Into Your Instagram Live

This is so easy, it’s scary.

And that’s one of the things that makes Instagram Live so awesome - it’s so easy, anyone can do it.  It takes no time, at all. And you can do it from anywhere on the planet where you have a signal.

So, how do you go live and bring someone in?  Follow these steps:

  • Open the Instagram App - this will put you on the home screen.
  • At the top left of the home screen is a camera icon.  Touch this.
  • Now you are in the Instagram Stories / Instagram Live area of the app.
  • Look to the bottom of the screen.  The default is “Normal.”
  • Touch the word “Live” to the left of the word “Normal.”
  • Use the round arrows to select camera alignment.  Once done, touch the “Start Live Video” button. Now you’re live.
  • Notice at the bottom right there are four symbols.  The second from the left has two faces. Touch this.
  • This opens up a panel where you can invite people who are in your audience to join you in your live video.  Select someone to bring them in. It might take 10 to 30 seconds for it to work so be sure to talk to your audience while waiting for them to enter the video.

You're Off and Running!

That's all you need to know as far as the basics of starting an Instagram Live video, and bringing someone into your Instagram Live video.

Of course, now you know some of the reasons why you should bring people into your Instagram Live videos.

Now that we've got that squared away, I will share with you a few tips on how to get guests to come into your Instagram Live videos and how to handle it for greater chances of getting your invitations accepted!

5 Tips for Successfully Inviting People to be a Guest In Your Live Video

Getting people to come into your Instagram Live videos isn't all that hard, however, you want to get things off on the right foot so it is easy for both you and your guest to make a collaboration happen.

So here are five basic tips that will help you get started:

Invite many people - don’t be afraid:  If I send one invitation out, I send 10 invitations out.  This is because there will be people who can't, some might not respond at all (not that they are ignoring you - some might - but because some people might not check where it is you sent them the invite), and some might schedule but later need to cancel.

If you are wanting to have guests on the show on a regular basic, you'll have to be fairly aggressive with invitations.

Tell the potential guest about you and your show:  This is in the case they might not know who you are.  Provide links when possible to places such as your Instagram account and your "About Me" page on your website.

Tell the potential guest about why they should appear in your Instagram Live:  Inform them about what it is you are inviting them to, why you are inviting them, and why they would make a great guest.

Have a calendar link:  Never send an invite without some way for them to look at your calendar and pick a time.  I use Calendly (but I didn't always), and when I didn't use a link to my calendar, arranging times to have people on was terribly difficult with a lot of back and forth.

But with a link, such as in Calendly, you can pre-approve times for your broadcast and they pick from times you already blocked off for a show.  It makes it easy for your guest - and when you make things easy, invitations get accepted more often.

Be prepared:  At the time of the broadcast, be prepared.  Have ideas on what you want to talk about.  Know enough about your guest to provide a nice but informal introduction.  Be sure you know how to pronounce your guest's name.  Focus on detail, but don't get overwhelmed and don't make a big deal about it.  Instagram Live is very informal but you want to come across as you know what you're doing.  Your guest will appreciate it.

You'll be fine.
